Hard Wax

Description: Hard wax is a strip-less wax that hardens on the skin and is removed directly by pulling it off without the need for a strip

Hard Wax Advantages:

• Adheres only to the hair, not the skin, reducing discomfort.

• Ideal for coarse or short hair.

• Often results in less redness and irritation.

Soft Wax

Description: Soft wax, also known as strip wax, stays pliable and requires a cloth or paper strip to remove.

Soft Wax Advantages:

• Quick and efficient for covering larger surfaces.

• Can remove fine hair for a smoother finish.

Clients should avoid waxing if they have or are experiencing any of the following:

1. Skin Conditions:

• Open wounds, cuts, or recent abrasions.

• Active skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, warts, or ringworm).

• Severe varicose veins.

• Sunburned skin or significant sun damage.

• Recent chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments (within 1–2 weeks).

• Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis in the treatment area.

2. Allergies or Sensitivities:

• Allergies to wax ingredients, such as rosin or certain fragrances.

• Hypersensitivity caused by previous waxing reactions.

3. Medical Treatments and Conditions:

• Active cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiation.

• Hemophilia or other blood-clotting disorders.

• Diabetes (clients should consult their doctor due to slower healing).

• Recent surgeries, especially on the area to be waxed.

4. Hair Removal History:

• Recent use of other hair removal methods, such as threading or shaving (wait at least 2–3 weeks for hair to grow properly or until hair is at least the length of a grain of rice).

Medications and Waxing

Certain medications can thin the skin, increase sensitivity, or interfere with healing, so these should be evaluated carefully:

Medications to Avoid Prior to Waxing

1. Retinoids (topical and oral):

• Examples: Retin-A, Renova, Differin, Tazorac, or Accutane (Isotretinoin).

• Why? These can thin the skin and make it more prone to tearing. Avoid waxing at least 6 months after using Accutane and 1–2 weeks after topical retinoids.

2. Steroids:

• Examples: Prednisone, hydrocortisone, or other corticosteroids.

• Why? These weaken the skin, increasing the risk of damage during waxing.

3. Blood Thinners:

• Examples: Aspirin, Warfarin, Heparin.

• Why? These increase bruising risks.

4. Skin-Sensitizing Antibiotics:

• Examples: Tetracyclines, Doxycycline, and topical antibiotics.

• Why? They can heighten skin sensitivity to waxing and sunburns.

Recommended Medications or Supplements

• Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (taken 30–60 minutes before waxing) can help reduce discomfort.

• Calming Supplements: Taking supplements such as Vitamin C or antihistamines may reduce redness or swelling post-waxing.

Other Factors to Consider

1. Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make skin more sensitive. Waxing is generally safe, but it may feel more painful.

2. Alcohol or Caffeine: Avoid consuming these at least 24 hours prior to waxing, as they can heighten sensitivity.

3. Skin Care Products: Stop using exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA) or other actives in the waxed area at least 48 hours before waxing.
